Job Description




The Coalition for Social Justice Education Fund (CSJEF) is the fiscal sponsor of the Building Pathways South Pre-Apprenticeship Program, which was created to prepare South Shore and South Coast residents, particularly women and people of color with low income, to enter into a career path into the building trades through apprenticeship. Building Pathways South is conducted in partnership with the Brockton & Vicinity Building Trades Council (BVBTC), Southeastern MA Building Trades Council (SEMBTC), the Women’s Fund of Southeastern MA and a number of other entities on the Building Pathways South Advisory Committee.


Building Pathways South offers employability and occupational skills training through classroom instruction, shop activities and field trips designed to replicate workplace norms with workday hours, strict attendance, hands-on learning experiences, and drug testing.  The program provides rigorous assessment of applicants, assessment of and referral to key supports needed to successfully complete program, career coaching, job development, apprenticeship and job placement; and participant follow-up.  


The Project Coordinator will implement and manage this new program. It is a part-time contractor position. The Project Coordinator will be employed by the Coalition for Social Justice Education Fund and report to the Executive Committee of Building Pathways South.


Specific Responsibilities:


The Project Coordinator is specifically responsible for coordinating with program partners the outreach, recruitment, and assessment of Building Pathways South candidates, hiring trainers/presenters, coordinating classes, trainers, and other presenters, assisting in the refining of the training curriculum, preparing and/or compiling training materials, negotiating and overseeing contracts for instructors and presenters and coordinating field trips to employment and training sites.


In addition, the Project Coordinator will be responsible for writing monthly program and financial reports on program activities (in conjunction with necessary information from CSJEF; establishing connections with and providing technical assistance to employers, unions, and workforce boards; participating on the Advisory Committee, Building Pathways consortium trainings and meetings and other program-related meetings; and making presentations as necessary.


To assure successful retention and completion of the program, the Coordinator will assess the participants’ progress in academic and hands-on classes; track trainee progress, strengths and weaknesses by developing an individual employment plan for each participant (in conjunction with placement specialist if position is divided); maintain participant records to track participants from initial recruitment to employment; work collaboratively with agency partners to ensure that all project participants receive appropriate professional services in a timely and supportive manner; and providing grant and budget reporting. The Project Coordinator will additionally be responsible for such other program-related duties as are necessary to ensure the success of the program.



The Project Coordinator will be responsible for placement in registered union apprenticeship programs, or, depending on the candidates who come forward, we may entertain dividing the position into two roles: Project Coordinator and Placement Specialist. The placement component of the position includes: maintaining and building relationships with unions and employers, conducting job development, placement and career coaching for program participants; supporting participants to develop a plan and apply to apprenticeship programs and following up with graduates to assess retention and stability.

Skills and qualifications

The ideal candidate will have experience in the trades, with relationships with the building trades unions and employers and experience going through a pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship program. These relationships and skills are critical for the placement and employment component of the program. Important skills for the program coordinator include project management, including grant management, communication, outreach and relationship skills and supporting student success.

All candidates should be committed to increasing diversity in the trades, in particular for low-income women and people of color.


Hours: The hours will vary by season. See draft timeline below.  We estimate that the position is about 530 hours overall. It is a part-time, contracted position, with the most intensive hours up to and through the training, which is slated to begin in April. Some evening and weekend time will be required.  The job will start as early in 2018 as we are able to hire the right person. The hourly wage will be between $20-$25, depending on the candidate’s skills and experience.

This is a yearlong grant-funded position, predominantly funded by MassDOT. If the program is successful, MassDOT guarantees funding for an additional two years.

Draft timeline

  1. January- April ( activities compressed in Year 1)

    1. Program set up: hire instructor, refine materials including outreach materials and curriculum

    2. outreach/recruitment - targeted outreach, presentations and other promotion of program to diverse low-income women and people of color

    3. Accept applications; committee decides on students, inform students and assess their needs to succeed in program

  2. April- mid-May Training Program (6 weeks)

    1. Coordinate training with instructor

    2. Work with students to make plans for success in program and also to plan to apply to certified apprenticeship program and understand timing issues. Monitor student progress, check in with them and refer students to support services as needed

  3. Placement- approximately 5 weeks

    1. Help students complete plans and apply to registered apprenticeship programs

    2. Work with trade unions and apprenticeship programs to successfully match students

Based on MassDOT requirements, prepare and submit reports as needed.
